Challenges of Urban SUSTAINABILITY
In the Philippines, nearly half of the population residing in urban centers with almost 25% in the capital alone. Suburban sprawl across the south and east ends has expanded the metropolis into the Greater Manila Area. This metropolitan area has around 25 million or a quarter of the country's total population. Regions around Metro Manila have sporadically grown without proper planning. The capacities is unable to keep up with the growing urban population.
The lack of land has caused other problems too such as: infrastructure, health, environmental, and social problems. The Philippines may also be at risk to low water and food sustainability. In order for the Philippines to pay for the infrastructure development, the spending levels will have to be at least 5% of the GDP instead of the current 2.2% of the GDP. |
